Leeds go top of the league

Leeds produced another dominant display to beat a stubborn Thirsk side 50-3

Leeds were virtually at full strength which resulted in selection headaches for coach Andy Daw. Danny Boyes returned in the centres and Michael Tuke also returned from injury on the wing. Joe Walton was unavailable, with Matty Reid starting at scrum half. Orlando Harper started at prop.

Leeds made an uncharacteristic slow start and struggled to get a foothold in the game. A few uncharacteristic errors crept in and Thirsk seemed up for the game.

The deadlock was broken on 22 minutes when Andy Gibney took a crash ball close to the line, carrying three defenders with him to touchdown at the sticks. The game continued in scrappy fashion with neither side dominating. On 34 minutes Leeds extended their lead. Leeds took a lineout on the Thirsk 20 metre line and set a maul to power Thirsk over the line, Josh Cassar scoring.

In the 2nd half, Leeds started to hit their stride. Intense and physical defence began to rattle the young Thirsk team, and Leeds began to punch holes. Leeds quickly opened the scoring off a scrum in their own half. The ball found Dez Claxton who burst down the wing, offloading to the impressive back row duo of Chris Chapman who then found Mark Massey to score.

Leeds began to dominate possession and territory. Super work from the forwards up the middle created space for the offload, and dazzling hands through the backs ended with Dez Claxton getting the ball out wide to score.

Another try soon followed. Ryan Croft barged through the Thirsk defence near his own line. A good offload found Neil Orr who carried through to the last man, before finding the supporting Chris Chapman to score.

Antony Wilkinson then created the next try, breaking down the wing and beating several defenders before finding Chris Brown, who jinked through then offloaded to Mark Massey in support inside who touched down. Leeds finished in style on the hooter. Excellent hands from the team through the hands and multiple runners confused the Thirsk defence. The ball found Adam Avison who strolled over with space to spare.

Man of the match went to Chris Chapman for another impressive days work covering every blade of grass. Donut of the day went to Neil Orr, who received the ball for a 20 metre drop out, but instead of drop kicking it, ran 10 metres and made a chip over the top of the confused Thirsk team resulting in a free kick against us.

Another good result for Leeds against a young well drilled Thirsk team. Leeds will be delighted with the win but there is still plenty to work on for next weeks top of the table clash at Knaresborough. Coach Andy Daw will have selection headaches next week with a full strength squad to choose from.

Big thanks to the supporters and sponsors who turned out in force. Hope to see you all in Knaresborough.
